a touch of gold

Santigold (born Santi White on September 25, 1976) is a musician, songwriter and producer from Philadelphia who formerly went under the stage name Santogold. She is perhaps best known for the song L.E.S. Artistes which became a hit in the UK and on American alternative radio. According to Songfacts, she was originally nicknamed “Santogold” by a classmate back in the 1980s because of her sister-girl style. In February 2009, she officially changed her stage name to Santigold as a result of infomercial jeweler Santo Gold threatening legal action against White and her label Downtown Records.

White was lead singer of the Philadelphia-based punk rock band Stiffed, but while in the band, she was offered a solo contract. Working with fellow Stiffed member John Hill as co-producer, she recorded her debut album, Santogold, which was released in April 2008. Upon the change of her stage name, her label Downtown Records issued this press release:

“Change the graffiti on the bathroom wall, get your tattoo fixed, get your T-shirt airbrushed and change the name on your year-end list: Santogold is now Santigold. She’s not telling you why, that’s just how it is.”

She oozes cool and is amazing live. She’s coming up playing Parklife, get your tickets while their still going. Fingers crossed we’ll get to meet her backstage for an interview!!!

That's a smore´..

So firstly our apologies for being absent for a while as we've been crazy busy with things happening! We cant believe how much the blog has taken off and the amazing opportunities that have come up since, but more on that as it all unfolds! But a MASSIVE thanks to every single follower for making all of this possible!!

The above shoot was shot by Reuben Johnson and make up done by Joereina N at our house whilst making the "totally american" smors. It was heaps of fun and super messy but the end result was delicious (and even the prep for it).

Last days of winter

Jimmy wears Neuw chinos, Black Friday coat, Vanishing Elephant Shirt, Country Road desert boots

Jimmy sports the rugged-up winter look that is ALMOST ending as Spring makes it's way. However I've got a feelin' Melbourne weather will still be as unpredictable as the lotto and throw in a few winterish days throughout the blooming season!

C'est l'amour!

Translation: It is Love!

Vanishing Elephant Spring/Autumn '11

This season Sydney-based label Vanishing Elephant is in love. It's a pretty severe case of infatuation, too: the sort that makes one meet parents, rub bunions, and record somebody else's "cute" laughter-snorts so that they can be made in to a mobile phone ringtone.

In between PDAs, the menswear designers have also been investigating The Colour Of Love. They say that squiggly head-over-heels feeling is comprised of three stages: new love, blossoming romance, and desire attained. This has been respectively translated in to pastel lighthearted hues, casually individualistic tailoring, and relaxed chinos that'll cuddle your soul through those cold wintery nights.

Best bits resulting from this philosophical approach are the spotty red shorts, preppy shirts, and cord-drawn detailing. It's nothing revolutionary but, overall, the whole lookbook is a lovely extension of their last collection. We'll be eagerly awaiting the next installment... especially if these hopeless Romeos continue working on the evolution of romanticism.

In fact, we'd like to see how the label translates those not-so-sexy next stages of love in to clothing. We reckon "letting oneself go" could mean fat pants and sweats, "cheating scumbag" a white men's shirt with lipstick smudges, and "the seeds of regret" a pair of leggings worn as pants.

we know its old but ...

Charlie over at Wait What spent three weeks on this mashup, traveled 26,542 miles, worked 116 hours at his day job, tweeted 41 times, made 26 new Facebook friends, danced for 17 hours, snowboarded 5 mountains, celebrated 5 birthdays, took 2 trips to the hospital, found out his favorite author passed away, and ended up with 11 tracks of probably the most minimalistic and haunting rap mashups you’ll hear for quite some time.  You’ll only be doing yourself a disservice by not giving it a thorough listening to The Notorious XX

The whole album was made available for free download on March 25th 2010, the 13 year anniversary of Life After Death’s release. It is pretty amazing to see how well this mashup works. Biggie’s smooth raps fit perfectly within those tiny spaces that The XX leave deep within their music. On paper it may leave you scratching your head. Once you hit play, it all becomes clear. This is a perfect fit.
(different songs with the same background)

Such a great album and we can guarantee you’ll have it on repeat for the first week. I lil' unknown fact that came across when researching the album to do with The XX is that the reason they have that husky, quiet, soul tone is when they used to practice in their garage they had to sing quietly due to neighbours and turns out they loved the sound from the result of singing low!

H & M Mens/Womens Winter '11

Clean and sharp is the look for men this autumn, updated with seasonal colours, fabrics and key pieces. It’s also important that the wardrobe works in a simple and efficient way, which is why design longevity is particularly important at H&M’s men’s department. "This season’s collection is about indispensible fashion essentials and about creating your own look", says Andreas Löwenstam, Design responsible at H&M Man.

For ladies, the upcoming collection is all about strong new shapes and bouncy, sculptural qualities. Strong colours versus black and white are one of the key highlights. The materials are not exactly all for cold weather, some of the pieces include silk and patent. For the men it’s all about the classic tailored and sophisticated look. Colours include the versatile shades of grey, camel and blue with orange as an accent. The latest H&M lookbook stars Swedish model Frida Gustavsson and Jeremy Dufour with photography by Andreas Sjödin
